Fally Ipupa, a name synonymous with Congolese music, has been a towering figure in the African music scene for over two decades. His journey from a young talent in Kinshasa to an international superstar is a testament to his enduring passion and creativity. As we celebrate his remarkable career, it's essential to delve into the evolution and influence of his music.

Two decades after launching his solo career, Fally Ipupa is marking the milestone with an ambitious two-part album project that reflects both his evolution and enduring influence on African music. The first instalment, XX, was released on 17 April, with XX Delirium due on 10 June a date that coincides with the anniversary of his 2006 debut, Droit Chemin.

The opening project leans into contemporary and urban sounds, bringing together a wide range of collaborators including Angélique Kidjo, Joé Dwèt Filé, SDM, Guy2Bezbar and Wizkid among others. The breadth of features reflects Fally Ipupa’s reach across generations and borders built through years of collaborations that have helped position him at the centre of Africa’s evolving music scene. The follow-up album will instead return fully to rumba the genre that first defined him after his time with Quartier Latin International reconnecting with his traditional base.

For Fally Ipupa, the 20-year milestone represents more than longevity. It is, he says, the result of discipline, vision and a willingness to take creative risks even when they divide opinion. While he always imagined a lasting career, the scale of his success from shaping modern Congolese sound to influencing a new generation of African artists has exceeded expectations.

The celebrations extend beyond the studio. Two concerts at the Stade de France on 2 and 3 May are expected to draw tens of thousands marking a rare achievement for a Francophone African artist.
